World War 2 started when David was 14 years old. He was expelled from school for being Jewish, forced into Lodz ghetto and then cruelly transported to concentration and work camps, including Auschwitz – Birkenau. He lost family and friends in the Holocaust, and endured terrible suffering and hardship. When the war ended, David moved to Germany to live with his father and twin brother who survived the war. In Germany, David enrolled in a year-long course which made him eligible for tertiary education and managed to enrol himself in a pharmacy degree in the University of Munich (despite not even having completed a high school diploma!). He finished his course, met someone, fell in love and got married. He was 25 years old when he arrived in Australia in 1951.
